Why work in Jersey?
Jersey is located 100 miles south of England and 14 miles from France and is 9 x 5 miles. It is the most southerly of the Channel Islands and boasts one of the best sunshine records in the British Isles. At the last Census in 1996 it had a population of 85,150, 52.7% of which was Jersey born.
Jersey is not part of the UK, but part of the British Isles and has its own system of ministerial government, legal practices and courts of law. Whilst not part of the EU, special terms were negotiated for the Channel Islands concerning the free movement of manufactured and agricultural goods. Under this agreement, Jersey’s fiscal autonomy is assured.
Jersey is a low tax location, with a maximum personal income tax rate of 20%- a rate that has not changed for 50 years. The island itself has an outdoor lifestyle and the work-life balance tends to be respected by the Island’s employers. Add to this the possibility of a short seaside commute and one of the best sunshine records in the British Isles and the appeal is clear!
Whether you’re thinking of coming here alone or with a family, Jersey has something to offer for all. As well as its stunning natural beauty, it offers cosmopolitan shopping and dining experiences (without VAT!) and has a vibrant sporting and cultural scene.
Schooling is generally excellent and follows the UK’s National Curriculum. The island has 25 States primary schools and nine secondary schools, four of which are fee paying.
Strict rules surround the purchasing and leasing of housing due to a shortage in this area. Prices are similar to London. If you are successful in your application, many employers assist in finding you somewhere suitable to live.
British citizens do not need passports to live and work in Jersey. Other EU citizens require their ID cards. Other citizens should check before travelling here whether they need a visa. Working visas are available for people with Australian and New Zealand ancestry.
